Mold-A-Rama

To procure a Mold-A-Rama figure, the guest swipes their credit card for an $8 charge in the machine. This increased from $6 last year.

Then, watch as two metal pieces close together and hot plastic injects into the mold. Once it has cooled slightly, the mold opens, and an arm pushes the model into a dispenser at the bottom of the machine. It will still be too hot to touch, but it doesn’t take long to cool; you’ll hear a fan as it finishes lowering the figure’s temperature. Once it stops, your new souvenir is ready. Just open up the compartment and pull it out.

Mold-A-Rama is a brand name for a type of vending machine that makes injection molded plastic figurines. Mold-A-Rama machines debuted in late 1962 and grew in prominence at the 1964 New York World’s Fair.

The machines work by melting plastic and injecting it into a mold. The mold is then cooled and hardened, and the figurine is ejected. The figurines are typically small, about 3 to 6 inches in size, and they are often of animals, vehicles or historical figures. Universal Orlando Resort often features a Mold-A-Rama machine within their current Tribute Store.

Mold-A-Rama machines were originally very popular, and they were found in many different locations, including amusement parks, tourist attractions, and even some grocery stores. However, the popularity of Mold-A-Rama machines declined in the 1970s and 1980s.

In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in Mold-A-Rama machines, and there are now a number of companies that still manufacture and operate them.

Universal Orlando Resort often provides seasonal Mold-A-Rama machines as well. Below are videos of both a holiday snowman and Santa Claus options previously available.

Many of the Mold-A-Rama offerings at Universal Orlando Resort are only available for a limited time, making them a fun collector’s item for enthusiasts.

We also recorded the process of creating a temporarily available Frankenstein monster mold. Check it out below. This souvenir came injected in a green color, and was available a couple of years ago before the price increase.
