In a report from Seatrade Cruise News, it’s been confirmed that the Global Dream has begun its transformation into a Disney Cruise Line ship.
Global Dream Transformation
While the vessel has mostly sat without much progress, mostly being maintained at MV Werften, there are now 400 workers available to complete the project. Global Dream will be one of the first vessels to run on green methanol, one of the lowest emission fuels available.
MV Werften administrator Christoph Morgen handed a symbolic key to the yard to Meyer Managing Director Bernard Meyer a week ago, paving the way for the continuation of work on the vessel.
Capacity is set to be reduced, with the original 9,000 passenger plans going down over 30%, along with reuse of space that was originally included for casino gambling.
With the original owner Genting Hong Kong going into administration due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the massive cruise ship was left unfinished and without a company to complete it.
Disney Cruise Line confirmed the “acquisition of a partially completed ship that will bring the magic of a Disney Cruise Line vacation to new global destinations.” It will “feature innovative Disney experiences along with the dazzling entertainment, world-class dining, and legendary guest service that set Disney Cruise Line apart.”
The ship is expected to have its maiden voyage in 2025 with a passenger capacity of approximately 6,000. There are rumors this may be delayed until 2026, though, especially with the lineup of changes that need to be made. It will be renamed, likely in line with the other Disney Cruise Line ship names (such as Disney Magic, Disney Wish, and Disney Dream).
After the completion of the Disney Wish, two more ships were expected to join the fleet. Disney Cruise Line announced that the next ship was to be the Disney Treasure, which is set to sail in 2024. A 7th unnamed ship will join the fleet as well. The “Global Dream” will become the Disney Cruise Line’s eighth vessel.
Most recently, the Disney Treasure aft was delivered Papenburg, Germany for installation, and Disney now has a ship’s log page tracking its progress toward completion.
