Celebrate Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) at a bar in the central courtyard of Universal Studios Hollywood’s upper lot during Halloween Horror Nights 2023. This location is full of beautiful decorations, 2 bars, and a little cocina with food options. Let’s take a look at everything this area has to offer and try one of the Monstruos themed drinks!

Día de los Muertos Bar

The courtyard area is large, with a few tables spread out in the center. On one side, you’ll find the bar serves up four unique cocktails inspired by the creatures featured in the nearby Monstruos: The Monsters of Latin America house.

There’s also a margarita bar with a spicy strawberry vodka margarita, Don Julia margarita, smokey cauldron margarita, and a frozen margarita.

The Little Cocina has carne asada loaded nachos, beef birria tacos with red sauce, esquites, chamoy pineapple spears, horchata churro bites, and a chocolate skull cake.

Scare actors wander the area and add to the atmosphere. They are happy to pose for photos.

In addition to the scare actors, there are also large, colorful sets. The area is beautifully decorated. This part of the park is blocked off during the day and only open during Halloween Horror Nights.

There’s a small vignette off to the side of the courtyard where you’ll find an animatronic skull with a story to tell.

A few small carnival games are set up on the side of the courtyard by the talking skeleton. Step right up and test your skills.

But lets get to the drinks!

There are four premium cocktails: Tlahuelpuchi Margarita, La Lechuza, El Silbón Mule, and Muerte. You can even “Make it a Michelada” for an addition $4.

A screen rotates through images of each of the drinks alongside the monster that inspired them. The Tlahuelpuchi Margarita is tequila, orange curacao, hibiscus syrup, agave, and lime juice with a black sea salt rim and topped with cranberries and lemon candy.

La Lechuza is limon rum, orange curacao, lime juice, coconut cream, sparkling lime yuzu, and strawberry sauce topped with a mini powdered donut and shredded coconut.

El Silbon Mule is spicy tamarind vodka, chamoy, lime juice, and blood orange ginger beer with a chamoy and tajin rim, topped with a chili covered mango.

Muerte – $18

Gin, Blueberry Puree, Cinnamon Syrup, Citrus Sour & Sprite, topped with a Shovel Stirrer & Gummy Skull Candy

The first three cocktails come in a light-up cup with a sugar skull pictured on the side. We got the Muerte, which usually comes in a skull-shaped cup, but we asked for it in the light-up cup instead. There’s no button on the bottom of the cup, so you’ll be flashing all night.

Muerte combines gin, blueberry puree, cinnamon syrup, citrus sour, and sprite and comes topped with a shovel stirrer and a gummy skull candy. The shovel was the best part of the drink. The cinnamon and blueberry were overpowering and created a very heavy, thick drink. This was undrinkable and tasted like medicine. The cinnamon was just too intense and gave the drink winter vibes instead of fall.

This was the worst drink we had at Universal Studios Hollywood. We’re just glad it came with a cup, a shovel, and a gummy skull so it wasn’t a total waste.

We would definitely skip the Muerte next time, but there are plenty of other options to choose from at the Dia de los Muertes themed area of Universal Studios Hollywood.
