Space Mountain closed for refurbishment at Disneyland Park on September 18. Today, September 26, we noticed that scrim and scaffolding have gone up at the attraction.

Scaffolding and tan-colored scrim have gone up around much of the perimeter of the attraction’s exterior.

No reason was given for the refurbishment when it was initially announced back in August.

The attraction sign was dark during our visit, and presumably will be until the refurbishment is completed and the ride reopens on October 26.

We expect the refurbishment to be for general maintenance and care of the attraction.

Scrim and scaffolding extends to the attraction’s exit area, as well.

The spires atop Space Mountain are now surrounded with scaffolding, though they haven’t been covered with scrim just yet.

Signs posted at the attraction’s entrance and exit inform guests that “there are no rocket launches today,” and encourages them to visit other attractions in Tomorrowland.

Guests are still able to walk up the exit to Space Mountain, where they can utilize the restroom and visit the gift shop.

There is also scrim and scaffolding inside the exit, above guests heads.

Construction walls are present in the exit area, with a door leading further inside for crews’ use.

The original version of Space Mountain opened in 1975 at Magic Kingdom. It proved so popular, Disney constructed other versions at Disneyland, Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland Paris, and Hong Kong Disneyland. Shanghai Disney is the only Disney Resort with no Space Mountain, although they have the original TRON Lightcycle Run.

Each version of the ride is a little different, but they all take guests on a high-speed adventure through the iconic pyramid-like building.

The Parisian version of the ride was originally called De la Terre à la Lune, and was inspired by “From the Earth to the Moon” by Jules Verne.

At both Disneyland Paris and Hong Kong Disneyland, the “Star Wars” Hyperspace Mountain overlay was originally supposed to be temporary but has become permanent.

Tokyo Disneyland broke ground on its completely new version of the ride in May 2023, and is expected to open the new version of the ride in 2027. You can check out our latest construction update here.
