REVIEW: Trying The 2nd Anniversary Cocktails at Space 220 Restaurant at EPCOT

Walt Disney World Resort recently announced a litany of new food and beverage options coming to EPCOT in the near future, among them being a collection of new dishes and cocktails at Space 220 Restaurant to celebrate the venue’s second anniversary. Though described as “new, refreshing beverage[s]” by Disney Parks Blog, the vast majority of these drinks debuted as part of a refreshed menu at Space 220 in May of this year. We were able to sample the cocktails after their release.

Space 220 Cocktails

Space 220 Restaurant is an interstellar dining experience located near Mission: SPACE in the World Discovery neighborhood of EPCOT. All but one of the cocktails included in the recent Disney Parks Blog post first became available in May (with the exception of the Gamma Burst, which is described as “Grey Goose Essences Strawberry & Lemongrass, Midori Melon Liqueur, and strawberry popping pearls”).

Galaxy Spritz – $17.00

Lagoon Bay aperitif, lychee liqueur, fresh lemon juice, prosecco

Looks can be deceptive — though one may expect this drink to taste like Blue Curacao based on the bright blue appearance, that liqueur isn’t even present. It’s instead dominated by the prosecco, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It’s a true spritz that’s generally tasty and refreshing.

Black Hole Fashioned – $18.00

Knob Creek Bourbon Whiskey, demerara syrup, whiskey barrel-aged bitters

In what is another example of the “looks can be deceptive” cliche, this drink does not taste of grape whatsoever despite its dark purple color. It tastes like a relatively standard Old Fashioned, but with a neat twist, as it’s served with a treatment from the “flavor blaster.”

It doesn’t leave a smoky flavor, but it does provide a bit of citrus.

It’s nothing earth – or, galaxy – shattering, but if you’re a fan of Old Fashioneds, you’ll enjoy this.

M4G4RITA – $18.00

Espolon Blanco tequila, watermelon lime sour, salted lime foam

You may expect this dish to be incredibly sweet due to what appears to be whipped cream topped with a colorful sugar — but it’s actually a lime foam covered in salt. This adds a nice tang to the already somewhat sour watermelon cocktail, but the flavors effectively complement each other. It’s a creative and generally tasty rendition of a watermelon margarita.

Illumination – $18.00

Bacardi, Malibu Caribbean Rum, passion fruit, blood orange, pineapple, lime sour, passion fruit boba

A delicious blend of sweet and sour flavors, the Illumination cocktail effectively toes every line. It’s tart, but not overpoweringly so. It’s sweet, but it doesn’t overload your tastebuds. All of the flavors excel on the distinctive rum canvas. The passion fruit boba is also a nice aesthetic touch. We would definitely recommend this one.

Saturn 2.0 – $16

Bacardi 8, Falernum, Ogeat, passion fruit, lemon juice

space 220 drinks 2498

This cocktail doesn’t break the mold taste-or-presentation-wise, but it’s fine. The flavors work together well, and the presentation, while subtle, is charming compared to the extravagance of the other beverages.

Space Age Mule – $17

Tito’s Vodka, fresh carrot juice, mango, lime juice, ginger beer, tajin rim

space 220 food 3127

This drink is strange in concept, but excellent in execution. The idea of carrot juice in a cocktail is odd, but it works well. Granted, there are several other flavors to help it out, but the carrot juice is not at all out of place. We think this is one of the best cocktails at Walt Disney World Resort.

Command Center – $17.00

Hendricks Gin, St. Germain elderflower liqueur, lemon juice, citrus elderflower foam

The drink is light, crisp, and refreshing. It’s served with a topping of foam and dried raspberries, and while far from our favorite, it’s not bad.

Shuttle Crew – $18.00

Ketel One Peach, Orange Blossom vodka, vanilla, tangerine, Red Bull, and Tang foam

This drink features a unique evolution of flavors. The tang foam on top makes you think orange will be the star of the beverage, but the peach flavor of the Ketel One shines through as you continue your sip. It finishes with a Red Bull taste. All of the flavors work together, making for a unique and delicious experience.
