Disney’s Live-Action ‘Snow White’ Delayed to 2025, Official First Look Reveals ‘Magical Creatures’ Turned Back Into Dwarfs After Viral Complaints

According to Variety, Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of “Snow White” starring Rachel Zegler has been delayed one day short of a full calendar year.

‘Snow White’ Live-Action Movie Delayed

Previously, the live-action reimagining of Disney’s classic animated film was set to release on March 22, 2024. Reportedly due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, according to The Hollywood Reporter, “Snow White” will instead be released nearly one year later, on March 21, 2025.

A first look at the live-action film was also revealed amid the news by Disney. The image includes Zegler as Snow White, surrounded by Bashful, Doc, Dopey, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, and Sneezy. In the image, the dwarfs look very similar to their original animated versions, which is interesting considering Disney’s previous statements about their presence in the movie.

Back in July 2023, it was revealed that the film would be leaving the idea of the dwarfs behind in favor of seven magical creatures. Disney said this “different approach” was “to avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film,” and that this decision was reached after “consulting with members of the dwarfism community.”

The discussion began when actor Peter Dinklage, who stars with Zegler in the upcoming “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” criticized Disney for making the film because of the historical depiction of “dwarfs” in the story.

Dinklage said on the Marc Maron podcast WTF, “I was a little taken aback when they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White… You’re still telling the story of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” Take a step back and look at what you’re doing there. It makes no sense to me. You’re progressive in one way, and you’re still making that f*cking backwards story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together. What the f*ck are you doing, man? Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soapbox?”

Despite the dwarfs looking closer to their original iterations from the animated film in this first look, it hasn’t been officially confirmed whether Disney has changed their mind on their previous stance.

The live-action “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” has been in development since 2016. Rachel Zegler will star as Snow White and Gal Gadot will play the Evil Queen. Andrew Burnap has been cast as the new male lead. Mark Platt will produce the film, while Marc Webb is set to direct. Benj Pasek and Justin Paul will create original songs for the film.

What do you think of this delay for the upcoming film, and its first official look at the cast? Are you excited to see “Snow White” once it eventually releases in theaters? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.
