Scaffolding has been removed from around the top of Space Mountain at Disneyland, which is currently closed for refurbishment. We’ve watched scrim come down and go up, but now it seems the project is finally nearing its end.
Space Mountain Refurbishment
A few days ago, scaffolding completely surrounded the top of the mountain. It’s now mostly gone, except for some at the very top.
Scaffolding remains up on the lowest roof, with scrim covering it. There are construction walls along the upper walkway, too.
The ride closed for refurbishment on September 18. We don’t expect major changes after the 5-week closure, just general maintenance.
The attached bathrooms and gift shop are still open, with construction walls blocking Space Mountain’s exit.
Space Mountain is scheduled to reopen to guests on October 26, 2023.
Space Mountain
The original version of Space Mountain opened in 1975 at Magic Kingdom. It proved so popular that Disney constructed other versions at Disneyland, Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland Paris, and Hong Kong Disneyland. Shanghai Disney is the only Disney Resort with no Space Mountain, although they have the original TRON Lightcycle Run.
Each version of the ride is a little different, but they all take guests on a high-speed adventure through the iconic pyramid-like building.
The Parisian version of the ride was originally De la Terre à la Lune, inspired by “From the Earth to the Moon” by Jules Verne.
Both the Disneyland Paris and Hong Kong Disneyland versions later received the “Star Wars” Hyperspace Mountain overlay. The overlay was supposed to be temporary but ultimately became permanent.
Tokyo Disneyland broke ground on its completely new version of the ride in May 2023. The old version remains open for now and the new version will open in 2027. You can check out our latest construction update here.
