Unnamed dogs that resembled Pluto were first introduced in the 1930 Mickey Mouse short film “The Chain Gang.” Later that year, a dog named Rover appeared as Minnie’s pet dog in “The Picnic.” This design was used to cement the character of Pluto, Mickey’s pet dog, in the 1931 “The Moose Hunt” short. The name Pluto was chosen just a few months after the celestial body of Pluto (then considered the ninth planet) was named, although it’s not clear if the dog was named after the planet or not.

Pluto has become a recurring character in the Mickey Mouse universe, as a member of the Mickey & Friends line and the “Fab Five” or “Sensational Six.”

Although Pluto doesn’t usually speak English, he and Goofy have been voiced consistently by Bill Farmer since 1990. Other actors who voiced Pluto include Lee Millar, Pinto Colvig, Jimmy MacDonald, Teddy Barr, and Paul Frees.

Pluto is frequently available for meet and greets at Disney Parks and is a featured character in the Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway attraction.
