Found in a flower bed near the Mexico Pavilion, the projection mapped topiary of Dante joins Miguel in their Flower & Garden debut. By day, the Xoloitzcuintle-turned-alebrije spirit guide is a colorful topiary with blends of blues, pinks, oranges, greens, and yellows. By night, the topiary is projection mapped with vivid, almost neon versions of those same colors, giving it a more dynamic appearance when the sun goes down.

Here’s a look at what Dante looks like during the day. He has been painted with solar-charged paint that begins to give him a glow as the sun sets, even before the projection mapping kicks in.

Debuting March 6, 2024, this is the first time projection mapping effects have been used on a Flower & Garden topiary. The concept was imagined by Walt Disney Imagineers Josh Harrison (Senior Illusion Integrator) and Brittany Smith (Production Designer for Senior Specialty Design). Earlier in the week, the team discussed how their ideas became a reality. Take a look at the projection mapping in action below.

Projection mapping is a commonly-used technology throughout the Disney Parks, in which regular objects, like buildings or topiaries are turned into surfaces for displaying video projections. Recent examples include Muppet*Vision 3D at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Space Mountain in Disneyland Park.
