New ‘Moana 2’ Teaser Trailer Released

A new teaser trailer for Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Moana 2” has been released, following the reveal of a new poster earlier this week.

‘Moana 2’ Trailer

A girl with long curly hair extends her hand forward at dusk, with a determined expression, reminiscent of Moana. A sailing boat's mast is partially visible in the background.

The new teaser trailer brings audiences back to Motunui, Moana’s island home. In the short clip, Moana (Auli’i Cravalho) speaks of hearing a call from their ancestors and sets out on a journey to reconnect her people across the ocean.

Familiar faces in the trailer include Moana’s parents, Hei Hei, Pua, the Kakamora, and of course, Maui (Dwayne Johnson).

According to Variety, the sequel film is written and directed by David G. Derrick Jr., marking his feature-length directorial debut. Music duo Barlow & Bear will contribute songs to the film alongside Opetaia Foa’i and Mark Mancina, who worked on the first film. Lin-Manuel Miranda is not expected to return.

The film’s synopsis is as follows:

In Walt Disney Animation Studios’ all-new epic animated musical, “Moana 2,” three years since her first voyage, Moana is on an expansive journey in search of people beyond the shores of Motunui.

Joined by Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.

The sequel was originally planned as a Disney+ series but was reworked into a feature film and announced by Bob Iger ahead of Disney’s Q1 FY 2024 earnings report earlier this year. The animated movie generated over $680 million at the global box office upon release and later reached one billion hours streamed on Disney+ in 2023.

A live-action retelling of the first film is also in the works, with Johnson set to reprise his role as Maui and Cravalho serving as executive producer but not returning as Moana. Co-directors of the animated film, Ron Clements and John Musker, recently confirmed they are not involved in the project.

“Moana 2” hits theaters on November 27, 2024. Check out the teaser trailer below:
