CONCEPT ART: ‘The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure’ at Disney’s Hollywood Studios to Include New Puppets, Motion Capture Characters

During a media event on Monday, Walt Disney World shared new concept art and details about “The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure.” The new show replaces “Voyage of The Little Mermaid” at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

An audience watches a screen displaying "The Little Mermaid: A Musical Adventure" in a theater with red curtains and dim lighting, eagerly anticipating each scene as if the story were on auto draft.

The show will include all the songs that were previously in “Voyage of The Little Mermaid,” as well as “Kiss The Girl” and “Daughters of Triton.”

The show will have all new puppets, as well as live and digital characters.

A theater stage displays a colorful, illuminated underwater scene featuring various sea creatures and a central mermaid figure inspired by The Little Mermaid, framed by ornate aquatic designs reminiscent of Disney's Hollywood Studios concept art.

Disney was hiring character performers and puppeteers for the show earlier this year.

Disney used motion capture for the characters who will appear digitally, including a “larger than life Ursula.” Ursula will also appear live on stage.

A scene from Disney's The Little Mermaid, a captivating musical adventure, depicts King Triton with his trident facing a swirling underwater vortex, while other characters look on from a boat.

There will be a battle sequence at the end of the show.

“The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure” will open in the refreshed Animation Courtyard theater later this year (Disney previously said in the fall). “Voyage of The Little Mermaid” never reopened following the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020. Watch our video of the old show below.
