A new-to-Florida 1st edition piranha tiki mug has arrived alongside two drinks at Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto. Two other versions of the mug were previously released at Disneyland’s Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar, but this mug is the first of its kind at Walt Disney World.
Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto is located at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort. Wristbands are available to reserve up to two mugs per person. The bands are available in person only, and the mugs can be picked up at either Grog Grotto or the outside bar area, Tiki Terrace.
The mug includes a beverage in the price, and guests can choose between the alcoholic Cautious Waters or the zero-proof Upriver Smiles. We reviewed both beverages below.
1st Edition Piranha Tiki Mug – $50
The piranha mug (and the drinks) are themed to the Jungle Cruise, but the Magic Kingdom version doesn’t have piranhas. The design originated at Disneyland, where piranhas jump from the water along the journey. The first version was golden and released in 2019. A second copper and gray edition was released in 2023.
Now, Grog Grotto has their own 1st edition of the piranha mug in bright red.
The mug is shaped like a hungry piranha, with a flat base on the tail. The drinks go in (and out) of its sharp-toothed mouth. It features geometric designs common to tiki mugs, representing the scales and features of the fish. The red is applied in streaks and thick lines, with a wash over the off-white base.
The bottom is labeled as a 1st edition Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto mug. A sticker denotes that the mug is both microwave and dishwasher safe.
Cautious Waters
Bacardi Superior Rum, Cruzan Mango Rum, and Bacardi Dragonberry Rum with Lime Juice and flavors of Minute Maid Passion Fruit Orange Guava (POG) Juice, Pineapple Juice, and Hibiscus
If you like rum, this is a winner. If you don’t, this has three types of rum and you’re better off skipping it. It’s heavily rum-forward, with little of the fruit flavors coming through. It’s very good, but the one-note profile makes it inferior to the zero-proof version for us.

Upriver Smiles (Zero-proof)
Lyre’s Spiced Cane Non-Alcoholic Spirit with Orange, Lime, and Pineapple Juice with flavors of Blood Orange and Hibiscus
It’s light, it’s refreshing, it’s perfect for a hot July Florida afternoon. All the fruit flavors blend together very well, not one overpowers the others. The cane spirit blends in well. We do recommend stirring it up to distribute the hibiscus, but it’s a hit.
