During the first performance of “Fantasmic!” at Disneyland Park on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, a rogue firework went off during the jungle segment, causing pyrotechnics to be cut from the remainder of the show.
Rogue Pyro Incident at ‘Fantasmic!’
In the clip below, you can see the moment the rogue fireworks went off, right in the midst of the jungle segment of the show that includes the monkeys on one of the floating barges.
The barges were traveling through the Rivers of America as normal with the monkeys dancing onboard when a green firework went off at the wrong time. The performers didn’t miss a beat, though, and continued on as if nothing had happened.
The show continued following the incident but with no pyrotechnic effects being used. In the above video, you can see the finale of the first performance without its pyro effects.
The second show of the evening included “essential pyro” only, which excludes the pyrotechnic effects in the Rivers of America and on the barges. Only select effects are used in this case, like Mickey’s finger pyro, his disappearance during the Genie segment, the disappearance following the Magic Mirror segment, the mirror breaking, spinner pyro, Mickey’s appearance on the Mark Twain Riverboat in the finale, and his final appearance and disappearance that bring the show to a close.
This is the third pyrotechnic-related incident in recent memory for “Fantasmic!” since the show returned to Disneyland Park in May; the first was Mickey’s finger pyro misfire, and the second was another rogue firework incident during the Disney Princess section of the show on July 14, 2024. In June, Mickey fell onstage at the top of the show, but managed to get back up in time for his iconic finger pyro moment.
The show returned in May 2024 following a one-year closure after the Maleficent dragon caught fire in 2023. The incident led to six Cast Members being treated for smoke inhalation.
