Tortuga Tavern Reopens as ‘Tortuga Treasures’ Gift Shop in Magic Kingdom

The former Tortuga Tavern at Magic Kingdom is now a temporary pop-up gift shop, renamed “Tortuga Treasures.”

People walking and resting near the Tortuga Tavern, a once lively two-story building with a rustic design and tropical landscaping, now closed in Disney World under a sunny sky.

The new area has been transformed into a gift shop specializing in pirate-themed merchandise. Tortuga Tavern closed indefinitely on June 7, 2024.

Much of the old Tortuga Tavern theming remains but the menu board is covered up with a pirate map graphic. Guests check out at the cash registers where they would previously pay for their quick service meals.

The latter closed for refurbishment today, July 23, with its merchandise moving over to Tortuga Treasures for now.

The outdoor patio features several empty round wooden tables and metal chairs arranged on a red concrete floor. Seating has been added outside as well, though there isn’t much shade here.

A busy restaurant scene with patrons dining in casual attire, many wearing Mickey ears, unfolds beneath a ceiling adorned with wooden beams and fans. A waiter is visible in the background. Despite its bustling atmosphere, this vibrant eatery recently closed in Disney World.

The interior seating at Tortuga Treasures is still present, so guests can take a seat to enjoy their food or take a load off during their Magic Kingdom day.

At this time, the entrance to the former Pirates League transformation experience is roped off. The offering closed in 2020 with the rest of the park due to COVID-19 and never reopened.

At Destination D23 in 2023, Disney announced the new arrival of a Pirates of the Caribbean-themed lounge at the Magic Kingdom. The new offering will extend the story of the attraction, and see the return of Peg-Leg Pete, the animatronic barker bird that greeted guests at the entrance of Pirates of the Caribbean from 1973 to 2006.

There has been no official announcement regarding the exact location of this new lounge, but it is likely to be situated in this area. Stay tuned for more updates as construction eventually begins and refurbishment in this area progresses.
