As the Walt Disney Company prepares to add the burgeoning world of artificial intelligence to its repertoire of operational tools, the newly created division of the company seeks to approach AI and mixed reality in a “responsible” manner.

Jamie Voris, who previously served as chief technology officer of Walt Disney Studios for 14 years, will head the new Disney Office of Technology Enablement (OTE). He will report directly to Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman, who announced the group’s creation in an internal memo.

“Our ability to remain at the forefront of technological advances will only be more critical as we move forward – making it all the more important to understand and embrace new technological shifts in ways that enable our people, creativity, and business.”

“The pace and scope of advances in AI and XR are profound and will continue to impact consumer experiences, creative endeavors, and make our business for years to come – making it critical that Disney explore the exciting opportunities and navigate the potential risks.”

“Disney’s Office of Technology Enablement team will have accountability to all our business segments and partner closely with leaders across the company.”

“The new group is not intended to take over or centralize AI and mixed reality projects that individual business units are working on but to make sure they are line with our goals and values.”

Bergman said in the memo, obtained by Variety.

Eddie Drake, who has been the head of technology at Marvel Studios, will assume the role of CTO at Walt Disney Studios in Voris’ absence.

  1. I’ve been a member of SAG-AFTRA since 2001 (as well as being the 3rd generation in my family to be a SAG member) and recently had to give up on a 23 year long career (at the age of 29) because of AI. I do not trust Disney to use it is any way that will not screw over performers like myself and my family. This is why the strikes last year went on for as long as they did (and should have gone on longer for reasons I won’t get into right now). Disney has already proven they don’t care and will replace actual performers with subpar AI if given the opportunity and it’s just going to continue to make TV and movies worse and worse while leaving countless people without jobs, not just performers but set and costume and lighting design and other crew members throughout the entire industry. From my perspective, either AI dies or the entire film industry dies.
