Multiple scripts for the next “Pirates of the Caribbean” film are currently in development, with one version reportedly including Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow.
Pirates of the Caribbean 6 and Johnny Depp’s Potential Return
The last “Pirates of the Caribbean” film was “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” in 2017. Since then, there has been talk of a sixth film, but nothing has come to fruition. At one point, a female-led spinoff starring Margot Robbie was in the works.
Disney has avoided “Pirates” star Johnny Depp in recent years amid controversies surrounding the actor, most notably his ex-wife Amber Heard accusing him of domestic abuse, which led to multiple lawsuits.
In 2020, Depp lost a libel suit against U.K. paper “The Sun,” which called him a “wife beater.” The High Court of Justice ruled that the abuse mentioned by “The Sun” had taken place. In 2022, Depp won a defamation suit against Heard over statements she made in a “Washington Post” op-ed. At the same time, Heard won her countersuit against Depp regarding defaming statements he made in the “Daily Mail” through lawyer Adam Waldman.
With the lawsuits over and Depp apparently poised for a comeback, sources told Variety there is a possibility Depp could return to the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise.
According to Variety, “Pirates of the Caribbean” producer Jerry Bruckheimer is developing two versions of a script for the sixth film. One version would bring back Depp if he and Disney were to reconcile.
A “knowledgeable” source told Variety, “Nothing has been ruled out.”
Disney has not reached out to Depp.
