“Moana 2” Box Office Breaks Records
The sequel beat out the previous 5-day record holder, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” and made almost twice that of “Frozen 2″‘s Thanksgiving opening record. It made more than $386 million over the five-day opening.
“Moana 2 has far surpassed our high expectations this weekend and is a testament to the phenomenon that Moana has become,” Alan Bergman, co-chairman, Disney Entertainment, said. “We’re fortunate to have an incredibly talented and hard-working creative team at Disney Animation who brought this new adventure to life, alongside our wonderful stars Auli‘i and Dwayne and great new music. This is a moment to celebrate, and we’re thankful to all the moviegoers and fans who’ve helped make this a record-breaking debut.”
Notably, “Moana 2” was originally intended to be released as a Disney+ original series. The decision to pivot to a theatrical release was made earlier this year.
The animated sequel sees the return of Dwayne Johnson as Maui, Auli’i Cravalho as Moana, Temuera Morrison as Tui, and Alan Tudyk as HeiHei the chicken. New characters join the crew as well, with Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda as Moana’s little sister Simea, Rose Matafeo as Loto, Hualalai Chang as Moni, and Awhimai Fraser as Matangi.
A live-action version of the original “Moana” is in production as well, with a release date set for July 10, 2026.
