After many voiced criticisms of the company, Disney has removed the AI artwork from Madame Leota’s Somewhere Beyond, the Haunted Mansion gift shop at Disneyland.
AI Art Removed From Haunted Mansion Gift Shop
The gift shop opened in late December 2024 as part of a larger project that reimagined the queue and grounds at the Haunted Mansion. Eagle-eyed fans were quick to spot that one portrait ostensibly of “The Bride” was a piece of art from Redbubble seemingly made by generative AI.
Now, just a few weeks after opening, the portrait has been removed. At this time, nothing has replaced it, leaving that area of the upper wall displays empty.
At first, some fans had speculated that another portrait was a first look at the long-rumored new Bride, but the use of third-party AI art and props from Amazon has lent itself to distrust. Without knowing if the other portrait is from Imagineering or if its just another third-party purchase has quieted some of the rumors. The new Bride may still appear when the Haunted Mansion reopens on January 18, but for now, it’s unconfirmed.
The gift shop is designed as an old carriage house that once housed Madame Leota, the medium seen in a crystal ball on the ride. It’s decorated with a myriad of mystic props and eclectic furnishings, as Madame Leota left her belongings behind. The shop sells Haunted Mansion and “The Nightmare Before Christmas” merchandise.
