Their former operator, Liberated Brands, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Sunday and will end their North American operations, Financier Worldwide reports.

Authentic Brands Group owns Volcom, Billabong, and Quiksilver. Authentic licensed them to Liberated Brands, which was founded by former Volcom executives in 2019. The company had a boom in sales after the initial COVID-19 shutdown and quickly expanded from 67 stores to 140. Now all will close after a liquidation sale.

Though the stores operated by Liberated will close, Authentic already pulled their licenses in December 2024 and switched to new partners, so the brands will remain intact.

“The Liberated team has worked tirelessly over the last year to propel these iconic brands forward, but a volatile global economy, consumer spending changes amid a rising cost of living, and inflationary pressures have all taken a heavy toll,” Liberated Brands said in a statement. “Despite this difficult change, we are encouraged that many of our talented associates have found new opportunities with other license holders that will carry these great brands into the future.”

Volcom sells skateboarding, snowboarding, and surfing apparel. It opened at Disney Springs in 2016 as part of the Town Center expansion to the shopping and dining district. A timeline for this and other Liberated stores closing has not been announced.
