Onward.

The former Mandalorian star was dropped by LucasFilm and Disney in 2021 after social media posts made by the actress regarding American politics and COVID-19 went viral. Carano was fired from the Disney+ series “The Mandalorian,” in which she played Cara Dune. The former MMA fighter filed a wrongful dismissal and sex discrimination lawsuit in February 2024 against LucasFilm and Disney. Carano is now seeking damages and a return to her job as an actress.

Carano’s lawsuit received funding from X Corporation, which is owned by Elon Musk. Head of business operations Joe Benarroch announced the financial support saying, “As a sign of X Corp.’s commitment to free speech, we’re proud to provide financial support for Gina Carano’s lawsuit, empowering her to seek vindication of her free speech rights on X and the ability to work without bullying, harassment, or discrimination.”

Disney later filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit in April 2024, claiming their firing of Carano for comparing dislike of certain political views to the Holocaust fell under the company’s First Amendment rights. The motion to dismiss was denied. Disney also attempted a stay of proceedings and interlocutory appeal, both of which also failed. The trial now has a set date of September 29, 2025.

Shortly after the date for the trial was set, Carano posted on X, “I am obviously very pleased with the opportunity to keep moving forward with the judicial process and into discovery. While I wish this was not necessary as it is not my desire to be in this battle in court, I will not shrink away from it because it is hard or uncomfortable.”
