A Mardi Gras overlay has returned to a CityWalk venue, transforming the Red Coconut Club into the Cursed Coconut Club for the season. 2025 marks the 30th anniversary of Universal’s Mardi Gras celebration, and the Cursed Coconut Club includes homages to previous Mardi Gras events.
2025 Cursed Coconut Club
Hours & Location
The Red Coconut Club is a mid-century tiki-style venue on the upper level of Universal CityWalk Orlando, next to Bob Marley – A Tribute to Freedom. It typically receives holiday makeovers for Mardi Gras (Cursed Coconut Club), Halloween (Dead Coconut Club), and Christmas (Green & Red Coconut Club).
The Cursed Coconut Club’s operating hours are:
- Wednesdays, Thursdays, & Sundays: 5 p.m. – 12 a.m.
- Fridays & Saturdays – 5 p.m. – 1 a.m.
Exterior
Banners hanging along the exterior feature the main imagery for this year’s Cursed Coconut Club: a fortune teller wearing a jester’s skull while looking at Mardi Gras dancers in a crystal ball.
Giant purple, pink, gold, silver, and blue Mardi Gras beads are strung along the railings of the round balcony. The panel below the balcony has a diamond-patterned purple, pink, green, and black decal.
Cryptids are an overarching theme of Universal Mardi Gras: International Flavors of Carnaval this year, particularly in the Tribute Store. Cursed Coconut Club carries on that theme with some interesting creatures. To the left of the entrance is a giant troll-ish head and hands. The sculpture is made to look like candle wax, with dripping candles and fake flames on top.
The smaller candles are each labeled with one of the following words: Change, Fame, Cursed, Serenity, Joy, Fulfillment, Fortune, and Wisdom.
Another creature sculpture, on the right, depicts a feminine figure with feathery legs, wings, and long blonde hair. She’s atop a burst of water, holding up a banner reading “Krewe Balatro.”
Main Floor
Lobby
A Cursed Coconut Club sign hangs from the ceiling in front of a group of colorful feathery decorations inspired by Mardi Gras costumes.
In the front area are masquerade costumes. There are two extravagant dresses and a suit, each with masks. On the walls are costume sketches and lengths of fabric.
Bar
Next to the bar is a cluster of colorful balloons covering a wall. More balloons hang from the ceiling with masks and beads. An archway of balloons is over a giant Mardi Gras mask.
On one set of windows that look into the dance floor are circular coin-like decorations honoring past Mardi Gras themes. Each decoration features a symbol and year — a jester mask for 2002, a treasure chest for 2020, a crown for 1996, etc. There is also a generic “Cursed Coconut Club” medallion. Above the medallions is a “Krewe Balatro” banner. Balatro is another word for jester, so the phrase essentially translates to Jester Crew — appropriate for the club’s jester décor.
Another set of windows is covered in giant tarot cards: Lovers, Emperor, Fool, Priestess, and Tower. The display is lined with tinsel and there are purple, green, and yellow glowing lights below the platform. Purple, green, and yellow feathers are attached to the ceiling light fixtures.
Dance Floor & Main Seating
More medallions are on the other sides of the windows. There are tall chairs and tables used against the windows.
More seating is on one end of the dance floor. A bar with a glowing countertop is on the other side.
Two life-size jester figures stand on platforms, looking down at the dance floor. One holds a staff with a Cursed Coconut Club sign on it. Green and purple lights shine behind them.
The fronts of the platforms feature colorful diamond patterns. “Cursed Coconut Club” with the fortune teller’s hands is projected on the slanted ceiling.
The elevated DJ booth is decorated with flat panels creating a jester’s pointed hat and diamond face paint.
A giant spellbook sits next to the dance floor bar. It features a guide to the horseshoe spread of tarot cards.
Giant masks with glowing eyes are on the walls above the benches. There are also life-size masks throughout the space, like this full-face mask surrounded by colorful feathers.
Second Floor
At the bottom of the stairs is a “Mysteries Revealed” sign with a screen showing a laughing jester. Among the props hanging in the stairwell is a banner featuring a skull. It reads, “The Eternal Mystery Magic Awaits You.”
The first thing guests see is a large white hand mural, with astrology symbols on the fingers and palm. Smaller three-dimensional hands on the wall hold beads. In front of the hands is an altar of candles.
You can get your fortune from a Zoltar machine on the second floor.
Fortunes are free and the card is even branded with the Cursed Coconut Club fortune teller logo.
Next to Zoltar is a writing desk with vintage props, some crates, and a red wagon.
Across from the desk are birdcages atop an old chest. There’s a sad-looking doll in one cage.
Around the corner is a live fortune teller — Madame Stratera. She waits in a tent-like area in front of her wagon. The space is draped with red velvet. Couches and cushions are gathered around a circular table topped with a crystal ball.
A nearby table is decorated with more tarot cards: Three of Swords Reversed and Ten of Cups. The center card in this spread is not turned over.
Across from the fortune teller’s tent is the upstairs bar. On the wall behind the bar are mirrors in ornate frames. Starry lights crisscross the ceiling.
Menu
Each of the three bars has a different menu of cocktails. Two offer draft beers and all three have the same canned beverage options.
