‘Snow White’ to Have Small Hollywood Premiere Amid Controversies

Disney will host a smaller Hollywood premiere than normal for the live-action “Snow White.”

According to Variety, the Hollywood premiere on March 15 will include a pre-party and screening at El Capitan Theatre. But the red carpet will be a small affair with limited media — only photographers and a house crew allowed.

The decision comes after Disney decided to skip a London red carpet premiere entirely, instead opting for a castle screening in Spain.

“Snow White” has faced controversy since its announcement, not only for being a live-action remake of a classic Disney film. Some took issue with the casting of Rachel Zegler, a Latina actress, as the titular character. As such, Snow White’s name has a new origin.

Rachel Zegler, adorned in a yellow dress, stands in a rustic wooden room with various furniture and decorations. Alongside her are seven short-statured individuals, each contributing to the unique backstory of this charming scene.

Peter Dinklage said he was “taken aback” by Disney being “proud to cast a Latino actress as Snow White” but still making a film with “dwarfs.” In response, Disney said they were taking a new approach to the Seven Dwarfs — but that doesn’t seem to have panned out. However, the film’s name was shortened to just “Snow White,” cutting out “the Seven Dwarfs.”

There was outcry after Zegler called Disney’s 1937 animated film “dated” because the prince “stalks” Snow White. Prince Charming has been replaced with a different male lead.

Zegler and her co-star Gal Gadot have also been criticized for their political views. Zegler has vocally supported Palestine while Gadot, who is Israeli, is staunchly pro-Israel. After Donald Trump was re-elected President, Zegler faced backlash for posting on Instagram, “May Trump supporters and Trump voters and Trump himself never know peace.”

“Snow White” will be in theaters on March 21.
