The new AI self checkout has arrived at Disneyland Resort, with several checkout stations in Boardwalk Pizza & Pasta now testing the technology.
Boardwalk Pizza & Pasta Now Testing AI Self Checkout

The AI self checkout technology was previously tested at the End Zone Food Court at Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort in Walt Disney World. After testing for exactly one month, the AI checkouts were removed from the resort and the standard checkout lines remained. It now appears Disney is testing the same technology at Disney California Adventure.

The two AI self checkout stations were only installed on the right side of Boardwalk Pizza & Pasta near the north exit. They were placed on regular folding tables, but the tables had a themed wrap to help them match the rest of the location.

The technology has no visible changes since we last saw it testing in January of 2025. Guests place each of their food and beverage items on a tray, and the attached scanner is supposed to identify all of the items automatically for checkout. Guests are encouraged to make sure each item is sitting separately on the tray because the scanner can get confused when items are placed close together.

The large screen to the side of the scanner will automatically begin loading once a tray is detected.

Once a tray has been scanned, guests are asked to confirm that all of the items have been properly identified. In addition to items placed together on a tray, the scanner also can have trouble identifying items that have been modified from the regular menu or look similar.

Once the prices have been confirmed, guests are guided through the regular payment process. Since the system is AI, it cannot handle cash payments. However, other payment methods including MagicBands, credit cards, and mobile payment should all work at the self checkout.

If you tap the screen, a page will come up where the guest can choose items to add manually. A nearby Cast Member explained that guests are normally not supposed to use this page, and it is intended for a cashier to make adjustments if needed. As with the previous test at All Star Sports, several Cast Members were stationed nearby to assist guests and observe the testing process.
