Disney is testing a new AI self-checkout system at End Zone Food Court, located at Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort.
Disney Testing AI Self Checkout
According to WDWMagic, this test hopes to streamline the guest process of ordering and paying for food. The test began today, and will occur for 30 days, according to management.
With this system, guests can simply take their tray of food, place it on the designated checkout counter beneath a scanner, and the items will be automatically detected through AI. Items do have to be separated so they can be properly identified.
Off-menu items or items that have had adjustments have a harder time being identified and may not scan, but a Cast Member is stationed nearby to assist.
After that, guests will get the total cost of their meal on the Elo point of sale system next to the scanner, see a list of their items identified on the tray, and be asked to pay.
We tried it for ourselves and purchased a regular croissant and a cold drink. Our croissant scanned incorrectly as a “Croissant PBJ,” but a Cast Member quickly fixed it before we paid. We also had to remove the wax paper we used to grab the croissant because it could prevent the item from scanning.
Accepted payment options for this trial include MagicBands, credit and debit cards, and mobile payment options like Apple Pay. No cash option is available, however. Disney Gift Cards can be used as payment with Cast Member assistance.
At this time, this new system is only testing at Disney’s All-Star Sports. It’s possible we could see AI self checkout make its way to other locations around property if the test is successful.
Currently, Disney offers mobile ordering for food at multiple locations throughout Walt Disney World Resort, and mobile checkout for merchandise at select stores.
What do you think of Disney using AI to streamline the guest experience at Walt Disney World? Is this something you’d like to see expanded to other checkout options around property? Share your thoughts with us in the comments and on social media.
