The directors of the Marvel film “Avengers: Doomsday” have confirmed there is a connection between the death of Iron Man and the debut of Doctor Doom.
“Avengers: Doomsday”

According to ComicBook.com, The Russo brothers, directors of Marvel’s “Avengers: Doomsday” implied that there is a strong connection between Iron Man and Doctor Doom.
Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the franchise to portray Victor von Doom. In an interview, the two were asked how Downey Jr. could return as Doom after dying in “Avengers: Endgame” as Tony Stark aka Iron Man. Anthony Russo replied, “We can’t explain that as it’s part of the story. But there’s nobody else in the world who could play this character the way he’s about to.”
The comment seems to imply that Downey Jr. playing Doom won’t just be an Easter egg and that the MCU will not ignore the similarities between the two characters.

The details connecting Stark and Doom are still a mystery and many options remain as to how the Russo brothers will form the connection. There’s some precedent, as Doom once took over Tony Stark’s body in a comic arc, as well as the MCU’s use of timeline variant versions of characters.
There is a possibility of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” providing further details however it’s yet to be revealed whether Doom will be introduced into that film or not.
“Avengers: Doomsday” is set to go into production next month and is scheduled to debut on May 1, 2026.
