Disney favorite producer Jon Favreau is developing a new series blending animation and live-action, featuring Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.
Jon Favreau Creating Oswald Series
An animated Oswald series for Disney+ was first rumored in 2019, before the streaming service launched. Six years later, it’s finally coming to fruition, even though Walt Disney Animation Studios is moving away from long-form content for the streamer.
According to Deadline, Favreau is writing and producing the Oswald series. Since directing and appearing as “Happy” Hogan in “Iron Man” (2008), Favreau has executive-produced several Marvel films. He created “The Mandalorian” and “The Book of Boba Fett,” plus executive produced “Ahsoka” and “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.” He’s also directing “The Mandalorian & Grogu.” Maybe most relevant to the new animation/live-action project, though, are his director and producer credits for Disney’s live-action “The Jungle Book” and “The Lion King.”
Oswald the Lucky Rabbit was created by Walt Disney in 1927. He starred in several Disney animated shorts before Universal took control of the character. In response, Disney created Mickey Mouse. Disney CEO Bob Iger made reacquiring Oswald a priority and succeeded in 2006. Since then, he’s been used sparingly, sometimes appearing at Disney Parks and on merchandise. He most notably appeared alongside Mickey Mouse as a main character in the Epic Mickey video game. In 2022, Disney released their first hand-drawn Oswald short in 95 years. Watch it below.
