REVIEW: Coral Reef Restaurant is No Longer EPCOT’s Worst Restaurant

Shannen Ace

At Coral Reef Restaurant, indulge in five exquisite dishes: a dessert crowned with ice cream, a cocktail adorned with a lime slice, a chocolate treat garnished with flowers, a vegetable dish enhanced by garnish, and a meat entrée drizzled with green sauce and paired with fresh vegetables.

REVIEW: Coral Reef Restaurant is No Longer EPCOT’s Worst Restaurant

Coral Reef Restaurant has seen some ups and downs in terms of quality over the years. The EPCOT restaurant is located in The Seas pavilion and offers beautiful aquarium views, but the food hasn’t been the best in recent years.

During the holidays, we decided to give Coral Reef Restaurant another try. We booked a reservation as part of a Candlelight Processional Dining Package.

Coral Reef Restaurant Menu

Drinks

Captain’s Rum Runner – $16.50

Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum, Bols Blackberry Brandy, Bols Créme de Banana Liqueur, and Tropical Juices topped with a float of Plantation Original Dark Rum

A tall glass of iced tea, garnished with a lime slice, sits invitingly on a table with a blue-green patterned surface, reminiscent of the vibrant hues found at EPCOT's Coral Reef restaurant.

This is a generic but nice tropical drink. It tastes of quality dark rum and is very sweet. It’s a little sticky but not bad.

Bread Service

Hawai’ian Loaf with Citrus Butter

A warm bread roll rests on a white cloth in a basket, accompanied by a small dish of butter on the side, reminiscent of the delightful dining experience at EPCOT's Coral Reef.

This is a relatively new bread option for Coral Reef Restaurant. We got a profoundly lemon flavor that we didn’t like. It tastes like a slightly doughier and less flavorful King’s Hawaiian roll.

In the charming setting of a restaurant, two brown rolls nestle in a white cloth-lined basket, ready to be savored. A small metallic dish of butter sits beside them, evoking the delightful simplicity found at Coral Reef in EPCOT.

Speaking of rolls, we also got the allergy bread option. These were essentially premade rolls that they put in the microwave. They’re fine.

Appetizers

Caribbean Salad – $12

Tomatoes, Onions, Avocado, Crispy Plantains, Pigeon Peas, Key Lime Vinaigrette

A vibrant salad featuring mixed greens, red onion slices, green olives, and plantain chips is elegantly presented on a gray plate against a smooth, metallic backdrop, reminiscent of the Coral Reef restaurant's style at EPCOT.

For our appetizer, we shared the Caribbean Salad. This is an incredible plant-based dish and one of the best salads at Walt Disney World right now. It’s large, delicious, light, and refreshing. We liked the vinaigrette a lot. We highly recommend this.

Entrées

Surf and Turf – $45

Filet Mignon, Grilled Shrimp, Garlic Mashed Potatoes, Key Lime Chimichurri

At EPCOT, enjoy a plate featuring steak draped in green sauce, shrimp nestled on mashed potatoes, and perfectly grilled peppers. A fork sits invitingly by its side.

This has a nice presentation with the giant peppers. The filet is a good size. It’s tender and good for Walt Disney World. We didn’t detect a key lime flavor in the chimichurri, but it was a nice addition.

At our restaurant, indulge in a mouthwatering dish of steak, shrimp, and roasted peppers on a bed of mashed potatoes, drizzled with green sauce. This delightful meal is served on a pristine white plate with a knife. Experience flavors inspired by EPCOT's vibrant Coral Reef.

The shrimp is also tender and not super fishy. Neither the filet nor the shrimp is outrageously good, but the dish comes together with the accompaniments. The peppers are cooked well and are a nice, different vegetable accompaniment. The mashed potatoes are so good. They’re buttery and creamy, but with some chunks.

Close-up of a cooked steak, reminiscent of a vibrant coral reef with its green herb sauce, showing a pink, juicy interior.

Altogether, this is an excellent option.

Coastal Palm Cakes – $28

Hearts of Palm, Quinoa, Kale, Pearl Peppers, Toy Box Tomatoes, Red Onions, Roasted Corn

A plate of breaded cutlets, resembling a taste oasis in EPCOT's worst restaurant, is topped with corn and cherry tomatoes, garnished with greens, served on a bed of quinoa.

This plant-based dish imitates crab cakes, and it does an excellent job. We like the hearts of palm and find this better than other vegan crab cake imitations. It’s creative and thoughtful.

Plate with a breaded patty cut in half, topped with a salad of corn, tomatoes, and greens, served over quinoa—experience this vibrant dish at our restaurant in EPCOT.

The dish is also huge and has a great presentation. We love the base with quinoa, corn, and tomatoes.

Desserts

A hand holds a restaurant menu at EPCOT's Coral Reef Restaurant, highlighting desserts like key lime tart and chocolate mousse. Coffee options feature Spanish and Irish specialties.

Pineapple-Coconut Bread Pudding – $10

Vanilla Ice Cream, Warm Rum Caramel, Shaved Coconut

This dessert, like a hidden gem at Coral Reef, features a scoop of vanilla ice cream topped with toasted coconut flakes on a small cake drizzled with caramel sauce, elegantly presented on a blue plate. It's an unexpected delight amidst reviews of EPCOT's purportedly worst restaurant experiences.

This is served hot, so the ice cream melts quickly. That being said, it’s a good sized serving of ice cream. The dessert is coconut-forward, thanks to the coconut shavings and the bread. There’s just a hint of pineapple.

A dessert from the Coral Reef Restaurant at EPCOT features a scoop of vanilla ice cream topped with coconut flakes on a caramel-covered pastry, served on a blue plate. A spoon waits eagerly in the background.

The bread is moist, soft, sticky, and sweet. The caramel isn’t overpowering. This is balanced well and is one of the better bread puddings on property — maybe taking third place after House of Blues and ‘Ohana.

Chocolate Mousse Bar – $10

Baileys Almande Liqueur, Chocolate Ganache, Almonds, Orange Coral

On a blue plate, this chocolate dessert is elegantly adorned with decorative flowers, thin slices, and almond pieces. A perfect indulgence reminiscent of dining at EPCOT's Coral Reef restaurant.

This is a vegan dessert with a beautiful presentation. The meringue-like topping had an odd texture but tasted great. It was light and crunchy with a hint of citrus.

A dessert masterpiece at Coral Reef restaurant is elegantly presented on a blue plate, featuring chocolate artistry, delicate edible flowers, crunchy honeycomb, and thin wafers. A spoon waits as a hand reaches to indulge in this EPCOT-inspired delight.

As for the actual bar, it was spectacular. You would never know that it’s vegan. It’s rich and chocolatey. The crunch of the shell is perfect. This is phenomenal.

Overall

Coral Reef Restaurant has stepped up its game. This was a great meal with the always great view. The Caribbean Salad, Coastal Palm Cakes, and Chocolate Mousse Bar might be the best three-course vegan meal at Walt Disney World. There are a lot of dining options at EPCOT, but you should keep Coral Reef on your radar.
