“Win or Lose” is a Pixar series produced specifically for Disney+ that is set within the world of the “Inside Out” films. The series follows the Pickles, a middle school softball team, in the week leading up to their championship game. Unlike many other series, each episode of the planned eight episodes focuses on the internal struggles and triumphs of a different member of the team.

Episode 1, titled “Coach’s Kid” stars Laurie. Laurie is the young daughter of the team’s coach who struggles with insecurity. Laurie is also the first openly Christian character in a Disney film or series after many years. During one of the first scenes introducing Laurie to the audience, she begins with the words “heavenly Father.” A cutout of an angel is also placed inside Laurie’s bedroom.

Laurie is the first character to be openly Christian from Disney since the 2007 film “Bridge to Terabithia,” which featured the children Jesse and Leslie attending church together and discussing religion on their trip home.

“Win or Lose” has already been in the news multiple times prior to its release on Disney+. Previously, an article from The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that a story arc involving a transgender character was removed from the show. While the character starring in the episode remains the same, lines involving her gender identity were removed.

A Disney spokesperson responded to the articles saying, “When it comes to animated content for a younger audience, we recognize that many parents would prefer to discuss certain subjects with their children on their own terms and timeline.” After the initial report, former Pixar employees spoke out about the change and claimed the alteration may have been politically motivated.

“Win or Lose” was originally scheduled to release in 2023 before being pushed back to February 19, 2025. The first episodes of the series are streaming now on Disney+.
