Tteokbokki Skewer – $11.99

Grilled hot dog and rice cake wrapped in a cheese crust with yuzu aioli, Japanese BBQ sauce, and scallions

They wrapped the hot dog and the rice cake with cheese for an interesting twist on a “corn dog” style dish. Our group was divided, with some finding this dish to be decent, but the BBQ sauce and yuzu aioli were too weak to impact the flavor profile. Others found it to be very good and planned to come back and get it again.

Celestial Steamed Bun (Vegetarian) – $12.99

A vegetable blend bun with bok choy, shiitake mushrooms, and vegetarian oyster sauce

The bun itself is good, with the right texture and consistency expected from bao. Unfortunately, the filling tastes like bland stir-fry. The mushrooms don’t do enough heavy lifting to replace the absent meat, leaving us unsatisfied. The bok choy is bland. It was improved by the vegetarian oyster sauce, which is light on the fake oyster flavor and heavy on sesame oil. Despite the sauce doing the heavy lifting flavor-wise, it couldn’t save the lackluster filling. We don’t recommend it.

Overall

The Tteokbokki Skewer is the clear winner. We really do not recommend the bao. There are no specialty beverages at Star Sui Bao, but the skewer makes for a decent snack that’s easy to eat on the go. However, there are better options in the area. Just nearby in Isle of Berk, Hooligan’s Grog & Gruel has some excellent mac and cheese cones.
