During “The Mandalorian” panel at Star Wars Celebration Japan, Lucasfilm confirmed that Ryan Gosling would star in the “Star Wars” film directed by Shawn Levy and announced its title.
New Star Wars Film
WDWNT reported on the Gosling rumor in January. Gosling appeared on stage with Lucasfilm’s President Kathleen Kennedy and Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni at Star Wars Celebration Japan to confirm his casting.
It was then announced that the film will be called “Star Wars: Starfighter” and will be released in theaters on May 28, 2027. It was previously speculated that it may be released in December 2027.
The film’s screenplay is by Jonathan Trooper. Disney describes it as a “standalone adventure taking place approximately five years after the events of 2019’s ‘Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker’.” It will be “an entirely new adventure featuring all-new characters set in a period of time that has not been explored on screen yet,” they added. Production begins this fall.
“Star Wars: Starfighter” will be the first “Star Wars” film in theaters after “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” which releases on May 22, 2026.
