This was the biggest Memorial Day weekend in history for movie theaters, thanks in part to Disney’s live-action “Lilo & Stitch.”
Live-Action “Lilo & Stitch” Opening Weekend
The remake made an estimated $145.5 million in its opening weekend, putting it in the top spot. It made more than double the second-place film, “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” which garnered $63 million.
“Lilo & Stitch” was in 4,410 theaters for an average of $32,993 per location. It’s estimated to make $183 million through Monday.
The top films in the U.S. and Canada grossed a record-setting total of $260.8 million for Memorial Day weekend. The previous record was set in 2013.
In addition to the Memorial Day weekend record, “Lilo & Stitch” was also the second-largest opening for any four-day holiday weekend. The biggest was “Black Panther,” which made $242 million over Presidents’ Day weekend in 2018.
The live-action “Lilo & Stitch” has caused some controversy due to big changes from the original film, like removing Gantu and Pleakley no longer dressing in drag. Watch the official trailer below.
