The braille map located in Disney’s Animal Kingdom has finally been fixed following the removal of “It’s Tough To Be A Bug!” from the park.
Animal Kingdom Braille Map

As with all of the Walt Disney World parks, Disney’s Animal Kingdom has a braille version of the park map displayed for anyone who would like to use it. The braille map is located to the left side of the Oasis area, close to the entrance of Island Mercantile.

The map is posted in a brown wooden frame near the edge of a small garden. The left side of the map has the guide with the various lands and symbols, but with added panels to represent the textures on the map.

Each attraction name is written in both raised print and braille lettering. The buildings themselves are also covered in patterned tactile material to help differentiate each location. The pattern on the buildings is unique for each land in the park, so guests can feel where each building belongs.

As with other Walt Disney World guidemaps, the braille map has to be updated every time an attraction is added or closed. The braille map in Disney’s Animal Kingdom has been updated several times recently, due to the closure of both Chester & Hester’s Dino-Rama as well as “It’s Tough To Be A Bug!”

As a temporary measure, the name of “It’s Tough To Be A Bug!” was covered with a sticker to make the surface of the map flat. The sticker was blue, since the line for labeling the attraction went to the right of the Tree of Life and sat in the middle of Discovery River. The sticker has now been removed, and the texture for the area has been fixed to match the rest of its surroundings. This is the same process that took place when the section of DinoLand U.S.A. was removed from the map.
Now that the stickers have all been removed, the braille map is back to matching the current paper maps for Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Soon the map at Disney’s Hollywood Studios will also need to be updated for the removal of MuppetVision 3D.
You can also revisit “It’s Tough To Be A Bug,” which closed permanently on Sunday, March 16.
