The live-action remake of “Lilo & Stitch” continues to smash its way through box office records, as the film has now passed “A Minecraft Movie” to become the highest grossing movie of 2025 worldwide.
‘Lilo & Stitch’ Highest Grossing Movie of 2025

According to some new numbers from Deadline, “Lilo & Stitch” has just crossed a worldwide gross of $957.6 million and an international gross of $553.9 million. These numbers beat both numbers previously recorded by Warner Bros and Legendary’s “A Minecraft Movie,” which grossed $954.9 million worldwide and $530.9 million internationally. However, “A Minecraft Movie” still holds the U.S. domestic box office record for 2025 with a gross of $423.9 million.
The article adds that “Lilo & Stitch” and “A Minecraft Movie” are the only two movies to surpass $900 million worldwide in 2025 so far. At this current pace, “Lilo & Stitch” is still expected to become the first billion-dollar grossing film of 2025.

Deadline also notes that “Lilo & Stitch” is still only in its sixth week at the box office, since the film premiered on May 23. The strong demand for the film helped make 2025 the biggest Memorial Day weekend in history for movie theaters. “Lilo & Stitch” also had the second-largest opening for any four-day holiday weekend, second only behind “Black Panther” during Presidents’ Day weekend in 2018.
Deadline further breaks down the international numbers for “Lilo & Stitch,” saying the film “is in the top all-time industry lists of such markets as Brazil and Mexico as well as the Latin America region as a whole.”
Due in no small part to the movie’s success, Disney is leading the domestic box office with a total of $1.1 billion in 2025.

The continuous records being broken by “Lilo & Stitch” are even more impressive because the film has been the source of some controversy. The remake made several changes to the original animated story, including removing Captain Gantu, Pleakley no longer dressing in drag, and the film’s surprising ending with (spoilers ahead) Nani giving up custody of Lilo to David and Tūtū so she can study marine biology at the University of California.
Dean Fleischer Camp, director of the live-action remake, has since made several statements addressing the changes. He admitted Captain Gantu “just didn’t work so well in live action” and “I do stand by the decision” to remove him from the film. He also explained the surprise ending by saying “People do get left behind.”
Perhaps unsurprisingly, given the success of the film, Disney has already announced a live-action sequel, titled “Lilo & Stitch 2,” is in development.
