According to new online reports, Universal has registered domain names for the sequel to the Super Mario Bros. Movie from 2023, possibly spoiling the film’s title.

Super Mario Bros. Movie Sequel

A new post by Kotaku has reveled the possible title for the planned sequel to the Super Mario Bros. Movie. The article, which cites a leak on X from user @Wario64, reveals evidence that several domain names were recently registered by Universal earlier this month. A domain name is essentially the title of a website that is commonly used to search for it online. Registering for a domain name is a common practice prior to launching an official website, which often happens for major upcoming films.

Per these reports, Universal has registered the domains supermariogalaxy.movie, as well as supermariogalaxy-lefilm.com and supermariogalaxy-lapelicula.com all on September 10.

These domains also match the style used for the previous Super Mario Bros. Movie, which has the domain thesupermariobros.movie.

As a result of this domain, reports are speculating that the name of the upcoming sequel film will be Super Mario Galaxy. This is the same name as a game for the Wii that released in 2007, which has the titular brothers taking their adventures to space as they travel to different planets and “free magical stars for Rosalina’s ship, called the Comet Observatory, which got messed up by Bowser.”

Interestingly, this game was the original debut of the star character Lumalee, who already appeared in the original Super Mario Bros. Movie. Of course, it is entirely possible the name of the film being similar to the game does not mean the plot will match.

Mario, Princess Peach, and Toad overlook misty pillars at sunrise—could this hint at a Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel?

We may be finally getting an official title announcement for the sequel film in the near future, as the next Nintendo Direct event is taking place on September 12, starting at 9 a.m. EDT.

Previous rumors suggested that the highly-anticipated sequel would be called Super Mario World after NBCUniversal published the name in a press release, then quickly altered the release to remove it. It is possible this leak was incorrect, or that the title was simply changed after that May post.

The sequel to “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is set to release on April 3, 2026. The first film’s directors, Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, and writer Matthew Fogel, are all returning.

The original cast featured Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek. Yoshi is expected to be introduced in the sequel.
