Disney Cruise Line Opens New BBQ Restaurant at Castaway Cay for Adults-Only Beach & Mickey and Minnie Cove Cabanas

The old Serenity Bay BBQ at Disney Cruise Line’s private island, Castaway Cay, has closed, and a new BBQ restaurant is open. Serenity Bay is the island’s adults-only beach, and construction has been underway for months on the new dining pavilion and new Mickey and Minnie Cove cabanas.

The former BBQ spot, which was called Air Bay BBQ or simply Serenity Bay BBQ, is still visible but surrounded by green scrims. This was a relatively small, open-air pavilion. Picnic tables were on a beach alongside the pavilion.

A new paved ramp and a wood ramp go around the former BBQ and up to the new location, Hangar 98 BBQ.

The new hangar building matches the Castaway Air theming throughout the island but particularly around Serenity Bay. The beach is located at the end of the island’s old airstrip. The number 98 is a reference to the launch year of the first Disney Cruise Line ship, the Disney Magic.

While the former BBQ was an open-air, this new pavilion is more enclosed, although seating is still outside. It’s a blue and green building with the Hangar 98 BBQ logos on the sides. The metal sign is purposefully faded with faux rusting.

Aviation-themed props are along the outside of the building and inside. There are old metal signs and propellors mounted on the walls.

Hangar 98 BBQ serves the same staples as the former Serenity Bay BBQ and the island’s other dining pavilions, Cookie’s BBQ and Cookie’s Too BBQ. Here are the options posted on a sign:

Beach BBQ Burgers (plant-based available)
Flavorful Fish, BBQ Ribs, and Rotisserie Chicken
Chicken and Seafood Rice Bowls
Island Sides and Accompaniments

Food is included in the price of the sailing.

More props and a fan are in a fishing net hanging in front of the doors.

Inside the building is a buffet of food and drinks. The kitchen is at the back, with Cast Members periodically refilling food trays.

In addition to more metal signs and a wood propeller, the interior has smaller props like tools and a seatbelt. These are mounted among pipes on the wall above part of the buffet. The space has hanging lights and ceiling fans.

A Castaway Air flag hangs by the kitchen. It features Donald Duck in an aviator helmet and goggles, flying with a lightning bolt in his hands.

There are small signs labels above the food trays, along with stacks of plates and bowls.
