A permit related to construction of the new Cars area and Disney Villains Land at Magic Kingdom has been approved by the South Florida Water Management District.

Permit #48-115133-P was filed on October 13 and approved on December 12. It covers 33.15 acres. The general project description reads:

Construction of conveyance systems and a new dry detention pond (attenuation only) for discharge into the L-407 Canal.

The L-407 canal is a backstage canal at Magic Kingdom that previously connected Rivers of America to Bay Lake and Seven Seas Lagoon. It is where the floats for the Electrical Water Pageant are stored when not in use.

The permit mostly concerns drainage around the future Cars and Disney Villains areas. The red lines in the above exhibit are drain lines, while the blue oval near the top of the image is a stormwater pond. The drain lines go into areas that are currently backstage. The structures outlined around the edges of the image include Big Thunder Mountain Railroad (bottom center) and The Haunted Mansion show building (right).

This plan is to divert rainwater away from the Water Pagent Canal and future Cars and Disney Villains areas, to the canal that runs along the North edge of Magic Kingdom.

The permit expires in 2030. That doesn’t mean that the two new areas will be completed by then, as the permit only applies to drainage. Disney could also file for an extension if needed.
