Over three years after scrapping plans for a Gaston prequel series based on the live-action Beauty and the Beast, Disney is planning a new live-action Gaston story. This time, it’s a movie.

According to Deadline, Dave Callaham is writing the film’s script and Michelle Rejwan is producing. Kate Herron and Briony Redman wrote a previous draft. A director is not attached.
Luke Evans played Gaston in Beauty and the Beast (2017) and would have starred alongside Josh Gad as LeFou with Briana Middleton as Tilly, LeFou’s stepsister, in the canceled Disney+ prequel series.
In Disney’s original 1991 animated Beauty and the Beast, the villain was voiced by Richard White.
Deadline states the movie will be “completely new and original” with a new actor and “swashbuckling” tones.
Rejwan previously oversaw live-action development at Lucasfilm, producing Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Andor. Callaham’s credits include Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Disney saw success with Maleficent, a 2014 live-action retelling of Sleeping Beauty with Angelina Jolie in the title role. It grossed $759.8 million. Another attempt at a villain-centered story was Cruella starring Emma Stone as a young version of the One Hundred and One Dalmatians villain. It had a modest theatrical release alongside a simultaneous release on Disney+ in early 2021.
