The newest addition to the Disney Cruise Line fleet – the Disney Adventure – has set a new record while crossing the Panama Canal earlier today, February 2. The ship entered the first set of canal locks around 7:30 a.m. EST and is nearing the exit of the final canal locks as of 8:00 p.m. EST.

The Adventure, weighing in at 208,000 gross tons and measuring 342 meters (1,122 feet) in length, has set the new record for largest cruise ship to ever transit the Panama Canal. The previous record was held by the Norwegian Bliss, operated by Norwegian Cruise Line, which weighed approximately 168,000 gross tons and measured 333 meters (1,093 feet) from stem to stern. This also makes the Adventure the first cruise ship over 200,000 to make the crossing.

The Panama Canal is an artificial waterway in Panama that connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, allowing ships to travel between them more quickly and safely. It is approximately 82 kilometers (51 miles) long and uses a system of locks to raise and lower ships across the Isthmus of Panama.

The Disney Adventure made the crossing as part of its journey from its original shipyard in Germany to its soon-to-be homeport in Singapore, a trip which began earlier in January.

The ship has since made a brief stop in Port Canaveral, reportedly for crew training, and a shorter stop this previous weekend in Curaçao for fueling and provisions.

The ship is on her way to Los Angeles, where she is due next Monday, February 9, for another port call. From there, she is scheduled to proceed to Tokyo and finally to Singapore ahead of her March 10 maiden voyage.
