Gertie the Dinosaur is looking a little worse for wear with a visibly deep crack seen on the structure at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World.
Dinosaur Gertie Showing Cracks

Dinosaur Gertie’s Ice Cream of Extinction has stood in Echo Lake since the park originally opened as Disney-MGM Studios in 1989. The iconic green brontosaurus is based on the character of Gertie the Dinosaur, who first appeared in cartoons in 1914.

All those years relaxing in the lake will naturally cause some wear and tear, but with the removal of vegetation due to Florida’s recent freezing temperatures, we noticed the dino is showing some distinctly visible damage near the tail.

A significant V-shaped crack has appeared at the base of Gertie’s tail, running horizontally across the top and then going under the waterline.

The crack does not appear to affect the structure, as the ice cream stand was open and operating normally. We do not know if repairing this crack will be a simple fix or necessitate draining Echo Lake to fix more serious damage.
