Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Permit for Steel Construction Filed Ahead of Muppets Reimagining

A new Disney permit is for steel construction rather than theming elements at Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster in Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The coaster will soon be taken over by the Muppets.

The Notice of Commencement calls for “General Construction” at Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster by Coastal Steel Inc. The company specializes in ride systems, including roller coasters, as well as other steel fabrication projects and maintenance.

The permit was filed by Facility Asset Management (FAM), not Walt Disney Imagineering, another indication this is not related to new theming elements. Walt Disney Imagineering did file three permits last month for electrical work and signage.

The actual Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster ride is not expected to change with the arrival of the Muppets, but Disney may be taking the upcoming closure as an opportunity to refurbish the ride.

Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster will be closed after March 1. The Aerosmith pre-show has already been boarded up. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets will open this summer — a relatively short turnaround for an attraction re-theme.

The iconic Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster guitar will get a psychedelic makeover and the piano keys at the bottom will get one gold key as a nod to Dr. Teeth. Guests are invited on a VIP tour of G-Force Records, now managed by the owner of the Muppet Theatre, J.P. Grosse.

The Muppets band jams in a studio as fans watch and snap photos—like concept art come to life.

Grosse has put his nephew Scooter in charge and guests meet the Muppet (in animatronic form) during the pre-show. There will also be animatronic penguin audio engineers, while Miss Piggy and Kermit appear via screens. The pre-show sees the Electric Mayhem delayed in the recording studio even though they have a concert across town.

The Muppets cruise a starry car in Rock 'n' Roller Coaster concept art, surrounded by instruments and glowing lights.

To get to the concert on time, guests board a limousine enhanced by Muppet Labs. The ride’s scenery and landmarks will feature a Muppet twist and guests will hear a soundtrack of the Electric Mayhem playing iconic hits.
