It is unknown if the missing machine will return, or if this signals a shift away from the classic souvenir following the discontinued production of pennies.
Pressed Penny Machine Missing
On a recent visit to EPCOT, specifically to the Germany Pavilion in the World Showcase, we noticed a staple souvenir offering was no longer available.
The pressed penny machine, which formerly sat inside the enclosed entryway of the Biergarten restaurant, has been removed. The area where the machine once stood can be seen in the bottom center of the image below, situated in the corner just barely past the threshold of the enclosed area. You can note the difference in coloration along the ground where the machine previously stood.
Despite the complex nature of the machine’s internal mechanism, these pressed penny kiosks are relatively portable and have been known to move location or disappear, presumably for maintenance, from time to time.
We also spotted a reminder of its absence – a lone, well-worn pressed penny, featuring the Snow White design exclusive to the Germany pavilion kiosk.
While the United States Mint has ceased production on the penny as of last year, they remain plentiful in circulation around the country. It seems likely that this particular machine will return, given that Disney has continued to introduce new designs to these souvenir kiosks throughout Walt Disney World.
Earlier this month, a variety of new designs themed to The Muppets debuted at the pressed penny machine near Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster at Hollywood Studios.
