Disneyland Files Permits for Monsters Inc. Demolition at Disney California Adventure

Disney filed nine confidential demolition permits with the city of Anaheim for Hollywood Land in Disney California Adventure, including the Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! ride building.

Avatar Land Permits

A group of people on a wooden boat encounter a giant sea monster rising from the water, set against a dramatic, luminous sky with rocky formations and celestial bodies visible in the background, reminiscent of an epic avatar realm.

The ride and surrounding area will be demolished and replaced by a new Avatar land, including a boat ride. Disneyland Resort officials confirmed to The Orange County Register that the permits support “long-term work to enable expansion projects” in Hollywood Land. The permits do not include start dates for demolition, but filings indicate work is getting closer.

Originally set to close in early 2026, the Monsters, Inc. ride will remain open until 2027. Disney decided to keep it open as long as possible to provide families with young children more options in Disney California Adventure.

Disney said that the delayed closing would not impact the construction timeline for the Avatar land, although they have not publicly announced an opening timeframe. The new land will be inspired by the franchise’s second film, The Way of Water (2022).
