‘Maul – Shadow Lord’ Review Scores Dip but Maintain Critical Acclaim as Season 1 Crosses the Halfway Mark

With 6 episodes released to date, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord remains among the highest-rated Star Wars productions ever, despite a slight dip in Rotten Tomatoes ratings.

Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord Success Continues

The official Star Wars and Lucasfilm Instagram accounts shared a short clip promoting the record-breaking accolade of the new Star Wars animated series, Maul – Shadow Lord, specifically as the series enjoyed a 100% Tomatometer (critic score) consensus rating following its first four episodes.

As of writing, following the release of episodes 5 and 6, the Tomatometer score has dipped to 98%, while the Popcornmeter (audience score) has dipped to 88%.

Despite the dip from 100%, the show remains among the highest-rated Star Wars projects to date. For comparison, the animated shows Star Wars Rebels and Star Wars Visions both sit at 98% critic scores. They are followed by Andor with 96% and the original Star Wars film, Episode IV – A New Hope, at 94%.

The critics’ consensus remains unchanged from the time the show’s 100% rating, reading:

An inspired look into the depths of an iconic character, Maul once again proves that through kinetic, vibrant, and engaging animation the Star Wars saga can continue in masterful spades.

The first two episodes of Maul – Shadow Lord were released on April 6. The first episode reached 4.1 million views globally, and the series remains one of the top streaming titles on Disney+ since its debut.

The 10-episode season continues to release at 12 a.m. PT Mondays through Star Wars Day, May the 4th. It has already been renewed for season 2.
