How Do Imagineers Handle Moving Music for Park Parades?

Walt Disney Imagineering shared a new episode of Imagineer That! featuring the mini-animatronic Tom Morrow 2.0.

In the new video, Tom explores how Walt Disney Imagineering and Disney Live Entertainment synchronize music, lighting, and special effects for nighttime parade floats and other live productions throughout Disney Parks.

To help explain the mechanics behind these complex audiovisual productions, Tom meets with Clint and Brian from Disney Live Entertainment.

The two explain that the core technology used to maintain perfect harmony across the parade route is Linear Time Code (LTC), an audio-based timing signal. This signal allows various onboard systems, including lighting, video, and show action, to remain synchronized regardless of a float’s location.

The parade float systems also utilize GPS signals to identify which zone of the park the float is in, ensuring that the correct themed audio plays through nearby speakers, many of which are hidden in clever designs that blend in with the area’s overall theming.

The same basic systems keeping all of this audio and location data in sync is packaged in a smaller form for the individual costumed performers who appear between floats.
