National Geographic’s new Earth Month show follows the fuzzy insects into the hive and through the world they pollinate with intimate footage that reveals how they live, work together, and what’s threatening their future.
“Secrets of the Bees”

National Geographic Explorer Bertie Gregory explores the extraordinary lives of bees, which are among the planet’s most important animals. Over three years, special cameras opened a rare window into a single hive, revealing its hidden world. With more than 20,000 bee species pollinating one-third of the world’s food, this series uncovers their astonishing architecture and intelligence, unlocking their secrets.
The two-part documentary is now streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.
A social media video shows bumble bees playing. Yes, playing! They aren’t just hard workers—they also enjoy some downtime. It’s the first time we’ve seen insects playing, and scientists believe it’s enrichment that doubles as skill refining. Watch it below:
“It was such an incredible experience to see bumble bees playing for the first time in person! The idea that bees can play, even when it doesn’t provide a clear physical benefit, can even give us insights into playfulness in humans. You’ve really got to see it.”
-Dr. Samuel Ramsey
