WDWNT got to play with some of the new Star Wars LEGO SMART Play sets during a special event near Walt Disney World. These new sets use SMART Brick technology to add lights and sound effects to the LEGO experience.
LEGO SMART Play — The Galaxy Plays Back!

This event is open to the public today, April 19, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. — but the line may be cut off early due to capacity limitations. It’s in the parking lot of the Walmart Supercenter on 2855 N Old Lake Wilson Road, Kissimmee, FL 34747. Look for the tent at the corner of N Old Lake Wilson Road and Magic Tree Drive.

To join the mission, you first need to scan to join a virtual queue. You’ll be notified when it’s time to return (maybe go shopping for LEGO sets in Walmart while you wait). Note that the experience does include bright or flashing lights, loud or sudden noises, and takes place in an enclosed immersive space.

If you don’t want to experience the potentially overwhelming show, talk to a team member for assistance in proceeding directly to the second, sensory-friendly section, where guests can freely play with the new LEGO sets.

After entering the queue, fans choose between the Light Side and the Dark Side. They then enter a giant LEGO brick.

Light Side

Inside the brick, you’ll find yourself in a transport pod. Up to eight guests can fit inside at one time. If you chose the Light Side, you’ll jump through hyperspace to Tatooine and then the Death Star. (“That’s no moon!”)

At each location, two guests are chosen to play with the corresponding LEGO set. We got to play Greedo and “Ben” Kenobi battling to become the new lead singer of the Modal Nodes in the Mos Eisley cantina.

Outside the Death Star, two guests battled with Vader’s TIE Fighter and Luke’s X-Wing. The ships make iconic “pew pew” sounds and the SMART Bricks light up, reacting to the other ship’s cannon fire.
Dark Side

If you choose the Dark Side, you’ll end up inside the Death Star. Emperor Palpatine demands a demonstration of how the “galaxy plays back,” so two guests take on the roles of Luke and Vader for a lightsaber battle. Builders will hear the vrooms of lightsabers as they battle.

We may have played as Luke, and we may have lost. The Emperor was pleased.

The Dark Side also includes a demonstration of the TIE Fighter and X-Wing outside the Death Star, so no matter which side you choose, you’ll get to see these ships in action.

At the end of both experiences, guests will see a video of the LEGO galaxy come to life.
LEGO Arena

After experiencing one of the two shows, guests enter the “arena,” where the new sets are on display and experts are on hand to explain how SMART Play works.

Here’s the gist: you “wake up” a SMART Brick by shaking it. You’ll know it’s ready when you see the white light glow. Then install it on a SMART Tag — one of the red-bordered pieces with an icon on your LEGO set. The brick will light up again when properly installed.

You can also install SMART Minifigures next to the SMART Bricks, activating different effects. For example, when R2-D2 is in Luke’s X-Wing, you may hear him screaming alongside the X-Wing sound effects.

You can mix and match SMART Minifigures with different sets. For example, each SMART Minifigure activates different voice sounds in the cantina. So Obi-Wan and Greedo each have a unique singing voice!

The icons on the SMART Tags indicate what lights and sounds will be activated by the SMART Brick. So crossed lightsabers on a SMART Tag means the SMART Brick will make lightsaber sound effects.

SMART Bricks have dynamic light, motion sensors, color sensors, dynamic sound, range sensors, and wireless changing. Each set that includes a SMART Brick also includes a charger.
LEGO SMART Play Star Wars Sets

SMART Bricks come with three sets: Luke’s X-Wing, Darth Vader’s TIE Fighter, and Palpatine’s Throne Room & A-Wing. But the bricks are compatible with any of the eight new Star Wars sets — and you can even build them into other sets if you want! For example, you could install the X-Wing SMART Tag and a SMART Brick on a different X-Wing set and get the same “pew pew” effects. Or add them to the PAN AM Airliner if you want it to sound like an X-Wing!
The sets are designed for ages 6-10 but, like all LEGO sets, adults can enjoy them, too.
