Disney Shares First Look Photos & Video of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Updates, Including New Effects & Returning Critters at Walt Disney World

Walt Disney Imagineers and Disney Parks have shared more detailed looks at the variety of ride updates and refurbishment work on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in Magic Kingdom.

First Look at Big Thunder Mountain Changes from Imagineering

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has reopened at Magic Kingdom with several visible updates throughout the attraction, including refreshed scenic elements, repainted structures, refurbished figures, and the return of multiple critters in and around the town of Tumbleweed.

In an Instagram post shared via the official Walt Disney Imagineering account, Imagineers have drawn attention to several of the attraction’s major updates

One of the first updated areas shown in the photos is the Tumbleweed scene, where the town’s familiar partially submerged buildings and mining-era signage remain in place. The “Tumbleweed” sign is still visible above the flooded settlement, with the water, track, and surrounding red-rock formations framing the scene.

A wider look at the Tumbleweed area highlights several visible changes. The short video from the post notes revamped effects, updated paint, and refurbished figures throughout the scene. The Rain Maker wagon and surrounding set pieces appear refreshed, while the buildings and props around the town show brighter color and cleaner detailing than before the refurbishment. The area also includes multiple animal figures, including birds and desert wildlife, placed along the rocks, fences, and rooftops.

Another photo spotlights a bobcat perched on top of a cactus. As noted by the image, the figure was originally part of the “Mine Train Through Nature’s Wonderland” attraction at Disneyland. Its inclusion continues Big Thunder Mountain Railroad’s long-running connection to Disney’s earlier Western and mining-themed attractions, while also giving riders another animal detail to spot as their train passes through the desert landscape.

Professor Cumulus Isobar’s Rainmaker wagon is also shown in detail. The blue wagon bears the name “Rain Maker,” with weather-related props mounted on top, including bottles, tubing, gauges, and other contraptions. The caption notes that cumulus clouds can develop into significant rain-producing storms, tying the wagon’s gag into the flooded condition of Tumbleweed. Isobar himself can be seen at the threshold of the wagon swinging a red bucket.

Another image shows the same Rainmaker area from a wider angle, including another figure of an elderly man floating in a bathtub amidst the flooding. The post jokes that Professor Isobar may have done “too good a job”. Two chickens are perched on a small outhouse next to the floating tub.

The Gold Dust Saloon is also featured with updated paint and color. The building’s light blue facade appears freshly repainted, with white trim, visible lanterns, and a red-lettered “Gold Dust Saloon” sign. The refreshed exterior gives the Tumbleweed street scene a brighter look while retaining the intentionally crooked, Old West-style architecture associated with the attraction.

A separate image highlights the “menagerie of critters” placed around the town. Visible figures include a goat, the bobcat perched atop a cactus, a rooster on a rock ledge, and other animals near the water and rockwork. The Town of Tumbleweed water tower is also visible in the background, with “Est. 1856” painted beneath the town name.

The final image shows a pair of donkeys standing near the track with packs and harnesses. The “come visit soon!” caption frames the animals as part of Tumbleweed’s humorous frontier welcome.

Another post acknowledges the Imagineering project team who hit the mother lode by getting to reimagine this timeless, Disney attraction.

On-Ride Photos

Disney Parks official channels also shared some still images of the on-ride experience, showing some additional angles on the updated themed elements throughout the ride, including the town of Tumbleweed, dinosaur fossils, and a refreshed facade on the Big Thunder Mining Co. structures.

Caverns and Interiors

Disney also shared high-quality photos of some of the attraction’s interior cavern scenes. Most notably, we get a good look at the Rainbow Caverns, one of the major additions following the attraction’s rework.

The caverns are filled with phosphorescent pools, iridescent stalagmites, and stalactites, creating a vibrant backdrop for the train’s early journey. The caverns are not only visually impressive but also carry a menacing aura, as they are said to be not entirely welcoming.

Elsewhere in the caverns, we also have a look at the updated bat effects, as you can see an army of glowing eyes in the darkness, adding an ominous visual component to an early thrill in the ride experience.
