Southwest Airlines is significantly expanding its Florida network after the abrupt closure of Spirit Airlines left major gaps in service across the state.
Southwest Expands Service at Orlando International Airport
Just days after Spirit Airlines officially ceased operations on May 2, Southwest announced dozens of new and expanded routes centered around Orlando International Airport (MCO), one of the airline’s largest operational hubs.

“Las Vegas and Orlando are foundational communities in our network, and places where Southwest long has offered the most service, seats, and nonstop travel options,” Southwest Chief Operating Officer Andrew Watterson said in a statement. “We’re bringing more to our relationship in both places and adding to the hundreds of flights a day we already offer in both communities.”
Southwest currently employs more than 4,700 people in Central Florida and is positioning itself to absorb some of the travel demand left behind by Spirit’s collapse.
New Southwest Routes Coming to Florida
Southwest announced several entirely new routes connected to Orlando and South Florida, including both domestic and international destinations.
New routes include:
- Miami to Las Vegas | March 2027
- Orlando to St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands | February 2026
- Orlando to Knoxville, Tennessee | March 2026
- Orlando to St. Maarten | April 2026
- Orlando to Little Rock, Arkansas | June 2026
- Orlando to Wichita, Kansas | June 2026
- Orlando to San Jose, California | November 2026
The additions include destinations that were previously underserved or impacted by Spirit’s closure, particularly leisure-heavy vacation markets tied to Florida tourism.
Southwest Increasing Service on Existing Routes
In addition to launching new destinations, Southwest is also increasing frequency on 17 existing Orlando routes, including additional nonstop service between Orlando and Las Vegas beginning in June 2026.
Expanded service will include flights between Orlando and:
- Albuquerque, New Mexico
- Austin, Texas
- Baltimore, Maryland
- Buffalo, New York
- Kansas City, Missouri
- Las Vegas, Nevada
- Louisville, Kentucky
- Memphis, Tennessee
- Milwaukee, Wisconsin
- Nashville, Tennessee
- New Orleans, Louisiana
- Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
- Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
- Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
- Rochester, New York
- San Antonio, Texas
- San Juan, Puerto Rico
Spirit Airlines Shutdown Opened Opportunities
Spirit Airlines officially shut down operations earlier this month after failing to secure a reported $500 million federal bailout amid rising fuel prices and continued financial struggles.
The Florida-based ultra-low-cost carrier had a major presence at Orlando International Airport and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, making its closure especially disruptive for Florida travelers.
Since the shutdown, multiple airlines, including JetBlue and Southwest, have rapidly moved to expand service and capture former Spirit passengers. JetBlue recently announced 11 new Florida routes and temporary rescue fares for stranded travelers.

Southwest’s expansion appears aimed at strengthening its foothold in Florida’s high-demand leisure travel market, particularly as summer vacation travel ramps up.
