George Lucas Comes Out of Retirement to Voice a Character in Upcoming Illumination Movie

George Lucas is coming out of retirement to voice a character in an upcoming Illumination movie. The news is interesting given the role is not for the Star Wars franchise, which Lucas created.

George Lucas will provide his voice for a character in Illumination’s upcoming Minions & Monsters. It marks his return to Hollywood in his first major project in over a decade. It’s unclear who the character is.

The news, first reported by AP, came from an interview with Illumination founder and chief executive Chris Meledandri:

But with its abiding affection for moviemaking, “Minions & Monsters” could find wider industry support. Even George Lucas lends his voice to the film.

From Yahoo News, Meledandri proposed Lucas join the cast after learning of a character who sounded like a good fit for him:

“An idea for a character came up out of the story, and so I said to Pierre [Coffin], who co-wrote the movie with Brian Lynch, and Bill Ryan, who produces with me on the film, and I just said, ‘Well, what if we could get George?’ And they’re like, ‘Are you kidding me?’ I had no idea, but I got such a fast yes,” Meledandri said.

Meledandri also indicated that Lucas wants to return for more in a future Minions project. “We’re thrilled to have him in the film,” he said. “I saw him recently, and he’s already talking to me about the role he wants to do next in the next Minions movie. So, it’s pretty incredible.”

Minions & Monsters is the third film in the Minions series and the seventh overall in the Despicable Me franchise. The sequel is also simultaneously a prequel: the trailer reveals it is set in the 1920s and follows a trio of Minions who travel to Hollywood to become filmmakers.

Minions & Monsters comes out in theaters on July 1, 2026. Henry and James, new Minions for the movie, are available to meet at Universal Studios Florida.
