Based on the original cult classic film, The Cable Guy series pilot is not meant to be a remake of its namesake. Per Deadline, the creators want to go in a similar direction to the Fargo series, which honors the original movie without redoing it.

Hulu has ordered the pilot to star Wayans Jr. and Johnson, who starred on New Girl, and the duo will also be executive producers on the episode. This pilot is being produced by Sony Pictures Television, according to Deadline. Rob Rosell of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, as well as Joe Piarulli and Luan Thomas of Cobra Kai, have written the pilot and will be the showrunners.

Wayans Jr. and Johnson will play the characters of Steven Stephens and Chip Douglas. In the original black comedy, circa 1996, those roles were played by Matthew Broderick and Jim Carrey.

Here is how the series is described:

In a world of endless streaming, binging, and algorithms, old-school cable technician Chip Douglas (Johnson) languishes alone — until Steven Stephens (Wayans Jr.) calls to have his cable turned back on, reconnecting Chip with a childhood friend he never forgot. The relationship gives each man something he’s been missing… until Chip’s enthusiasm turns into obsession. Inspired by the movie, the show explores the darkly absurd side of modern-day male friendship.
